The thumb spica is a splint that is made of a rigid material, such as plaster or fiberglass. It is worn around the thumb and wrist, and it extends from the base of the thumb to the tip of the middle finger. The thumb spica is typically applied by a doctor or nurse, but it can also be applied at home using a pre-made splint kit.
To apply a thumb spica, the patient’s hand should be washed and dried. The splint should then be placed around the thumb and wrist, and it should be secured with bandages or tape. The thumb spica should be snug but not too tight, and it should allow the patient to move their fingers freely.
The thumb spica should be worn for as long as recommended by the doctor. This is typically 2-4 weeks for sprains and fractures, and 1-2 weeks for soft tissue injuries. The thumb spica should be removed and the skin underneath should be checked daily for signs of irritation or infection.
